ROME — Pope Francis, on the second floor of Santa Marta, in room 201, is living his convalescence with 24-hour assistance from the medical team of the Vatican’s Directorate of Health and Hygiene, continuing drug therapy, motor physiotherapy and above all respiratory physiotherapy which is also linked to speech therapy. This was announced by the Vatican Press Office, providing updates on how the Pontiff is experiencing his convalescence and on his state of health since he was discharged from the Gemelli hospital on Sunday.
As for oxygenation, the Pontiff continues to receive high-flow oxygen at night, while during the day there is an alternation of high flows with cannulas and there are times when he is without oxygen administration. Visits to room 201, it is reported, are kept “to a minimum, to the closest collaborators”. The Pontiff, in his room in Santa Marta, also continues to do some work as he did in recent days during his stay at the Gemelli.
“The doctors have explained that the Pope is not in danger of life now, the measures being taken are in view of an improvement”, Vatican sources report. The same sources, asked about the interview in the Corsera with Sergio Alfieri, head of the medical team that treated the Pontiff at the Gemelli, regarding the fact that the doctor says that it was the Pope who asked the doctors “not to give up” and to do everything possible on the critical night of February 28 when – as the doctors said – his life was at risk, point out that “there are things that do not constitute therapeutic overkill”.
It is very likely that the Pope’s Sunday Angelus will be released only in written form as has happened on the other six Sundays in a row, the Vatican Press Office reports.
On the rites of Holy Week to be celebrated in less than a month “some things are still being decided”. And in any case, on the presence or absence of the Pope, and possibly in what way, “it will be assessed on the basis of improvements”, they reiterate from the Vatican.
Now that the Pope has to follow a two-month convalescence in Santa Marta, as indicated by the doctors at the Gemelli, who will receive the Heads of State? “We will see, there are no particular announcements”, they explain from the Vatican.
